Overview

Partial or complete removable dentures need pastes and adhesives to stay put in your mouth, but implanted dentures are connected to metal posts in your jawbone so they are stable and secure. This means that the dentures won't slip, even when you are speaking or eating. With more support and security, patients with implanted dentures can rest assured that their teeth will stay in their mouth. Implant dentures look beautiful and can be cleaned just like your natural teeth. If you are looking to avoid any problem with the denture fitting in your mouth or chewing food, we offer a permanent solution. Dr. Troy Gombert and his team have been placing permanent dentures called overdentures in Chandler, AZ, and we are eager to do the same for you. Overdentures are permanent dentures that are meant to go over any existing natural teeth or implants. Overdentures are also more aesthetically pleasing and more natural looking than their removable counterparts. In some cases, a dental implant procedure requires the combining of dentures and implants in what is called an implant-supported denture. Get more information on implant dentures and if they are the right choice for your needs. Schedule an appointment with fellowship-trained cosmetic dentist Dr. Gombert.

Best Candidates

You may want implant dentures if you're currently using removable dentures or if you need dentures to replace most of your teeth. A big advantage over removable dentures, implanted dentures don't require soaking and adhesives. Implant-supported dentures have fewer restrictions on want you can eat and drink compared to removable dentures, and implant dentures can be brushed just like your natural teeth. The dental implant simulates the natural roots of your teeth, so your jawbone and gums are unlikely to become weak. At your appointment, Dr. Gombert will examine the health of your mouth to decide if your jawbone and gums are able to bond with the dental implants. If needed, bone and/or gum grafts may be performed to strengthen specific areas before implant surgery.

What to Expect

Before treatment, Dr. Gombert will complete a dental exam with digital imaging to better understand the strength of your jawbone and gums. If your gums or jawbone are not strong enough to securely hold the dental implants, a gum and/or bone graft surgery may be needed. As soon as the grafted area is fully healed, your implant surgery can be scheduled.

Your mouth will be numbed with local anesthesia before the procedure. Sedation options can be discussed if the process will be lengthy or if you need it to feel comfortable. Dr. Gombert will make surgical incisions in your gums and insert posts in the holes in the jawbone. For dentures, at least four implants are needed for each arch. The incisions in the gums will be sutured with some of the implant visible above the gums. The posts will be covered with a temporary denture as your mouth heals in 4 – 6 months. The implants will integrate with your gums and jaw. As soon as Dr. Gombert feels the posts are secure, your custom-made dentures can be connected to the implants and fitted.

Recovery

Implanted dentures should be cleaned with daily brushing and flossing. You should schedule yearly exams and cleanings at Dr. Troy Gombert to have the wear and fit of your dentures and implants evaluated. If you properly care for them, implanted dentures can last several years. Dr. Gombert can help you decide when your implants or dentures should be replaced or repaired.

Based on your dental insurance policy, the expense of custom dentures and implants will usually be partially covered. Before your surgery, a member of our team will talk to your insurance provider to determine your coverage and personal cost.
